Faces of Fire

Acid attack survivors carry more than physical scars. Long after the wounds heal, many continue to face social stigma, unemployment, and financial dependence that make rebuilding their lives an everyday struggle. This campaign is about helping survivors move beyond survival and toward independence, dignity, and a future they define for themselves.

The Reality Survivors Face

In 2023, 207 acid attacks were officially reported in India, according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), and experts believe the real number is far higher, with many cases going unreported due to stigma and fear. Behind every statistic is a person, most often a woman or young girl, whose life is reshaped in an instant.

But the attack is only the beginning. Survivors frequently face:

  • Social stigma and discrimination in everyday life
  • Difficulty finding stable employment
  • Long-term medical and financial pressures
  • A loss of confidence and independence

Many survivors are forced to keep fighting the same battle long after surviving the attack itself.

Why We Focus on Livelihood Support

Many organizations focus on the immediate aftermath of an attack — medical treatment, legal aid, emergency support. These services are essential. But recovery does not end when the hospital stay does.

As a youth-led organization, Girl Up Invicta may not be able to fund surgeries or large-scale rehabilitation. What we can do is contribute meaningfully to something that creates lasting change: economic independence. By directing funds to a registered organization that works directly with survivors, we can help fund skill development, employment opportunities, and income-generating initiatives.

We believe this approach is sustainable because it addresses one of the root challenges survivors face: the lack of opportunities to earn and live independently. When a survivor gains a stable source of income, the impact reaches their family, their confidence, and their place in the community.

What This Campaign Will Do

By raising ₹15,000, this campaign will support livelihood and rehabilitation initiatives for acid attack survivors. Once the campaign concludes, the funds will be directed to a registered NGO that works directly with survivors. Funds may go toward:

  • Vocational and skill-development training
  • Resources and equipment to start small income-generating activities
  • Career support such as mentorship and job-readiness training
  • Rehabilitation services that help survivors rebuild confidence

By investing in sustainable livelihoods rather than short-term assistance alone, we hope to create lasting opportunities that empower survivors to achieve financial stability.

The Broader Impact

When survivors gain financial independence, the impact extends far beyond the individual. Families gain economic stability and reduced caregiving burdens. Children gain access to better education and a more secure environment.

On a broader level, empowering survivors challenges the stigma they face. It shows that survivors are defined not by what happened to them, but by their resilience, skills, and potential — encouraging employers, communities, and institutions to become more inclusive.

Why This Matters to Us

We believe no one should have their future defined by something that happened to them. What struck us most in learning about survivors' experiences was not only the trauma they endure, but the barriers they continue to face long after — stigma, limited employment, and financial dependence.

Through our work with Girl Up Invicta, we've grown passionate about dignity, equality, and empowerment. True support goes beyond sympathy; it means creating opportunities for people to rebuild their lives on their own terms. Even a small contribution can help someone take a step toward a future where they are valued for their strength and aspirations.
